Week 2 - New Six leaders

After seeing off three of our older Cub Scouts to Scouts last week, it left us with holes to fill. So with a lot of email chatter the following occured.

+ Gavin was appointed a Sixer of Black
+ Luke his Second
i
+ Alex L was appointed Sixer of Red
+ Alex H her second

+ Elly remains Sixer of Tawny
+ Braeden is now her second

+ Ben A was appointed Sixer of Brown
+ Nathasa his Second

We have 2 more to appoint to White next week.

Well done to you.all. You now need to be leaders and help your six out.

As sometimes happens we reopen a Six called Akela. Sam and Kaleb, will sadly begin linking to Scouts and upon return.from Cuboree will move on. As they have earned all levels in Boomerang and achieved Grey Wolfs we see them now as the Sixer and newbie.mentors. As.a reult they were appointed joint Sixers of Akela Six. One of their duties is to look after all the newbies that come onboard and help them with their linking. They will also be expected to step in and help mentor the other Sixers who have just been appointed.

This Six is held in high regard and we know they will live up to the challenge.

Once the formalities were over we had a Cub Scouts Traditions night. Dingo started with a new game, that we will use again, and then sat the Cub Scouts down to cover off the how and why of the Cub Scout sign, plus provide awareness of Lord Baden Powell was.

We then broke into the Boomerang levels, while the newbies went off for journey card sessions.

We covered off Section 5 of the Boomerang award. Silvers got to hear the tale of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and understand about the yearsbthe Beenleigh Group has existed.

The Golds hit Bagheera up at the end as for the location of the next Australian Jamboree. It will be.in Maryborough QLD from Jan 2, 2013.

The Bronzes had to find out when Scouting started and when it started in Australia.

If was a full on night but we are back in the swing again.

Next week all Cub Scouts are to come in plain clothes as there is painting and dying involved. Scraves and Woggles still required.

Fire, Fire

No not really, we were visited this week by the Cedar Creek Rural Fire Service. The cubs were given a presentation on bushfires and safety.

The videos were great and showed how rapidly a fire can catch on.

Each cub was presented with a bushfire safety pack and it included a couple of models.

The best bit was to come. At the end, each cub were given a chance to use the fire hose on the truck the fire fighters brought up. I was waiting for the smaller cubs to be lifted.off the ground, but the fire fighters were holding tight.

Now if it wasn't wet enough already with the rain on Tuesday, after 20+ cubs hosing the parade ground it was like January rain.

It was a great experience and one we will do again.

Thanks to Peter Davidson(aka Redback) for organising this on short notice. Our planned outing to Beenleigh fire station was put on hold.

Another Bronze Boomerang

Last week I posted all the recipients who earned and were awarded their Boomerang Badges. I have inexpliciable left one off - Connor, our quiet achiever, who was awarded his Bronze Boomerang also on that night.

Bagheera has spent time in the sin bin for forgetting him off the list last week.

Science night

Well what a terrific night the cubs had this week. Thanks to Rama, we held a science night , where the cubs got to make an electeic magnet with a screw, wires and battery. The cubs were able to demonstrate it working by picking up washers.

The second experiment was to build a potato clock. This invovles using 2 potatos as the batteries, that are lined with wires to a digital clock. The idea is to shiw hiw a chemical reaction between zinc nails and the acids contained in the potatos can generate electricity.

They all worked after some adjustment.

Well done Rama this was a great night.

Promise and Law night

Last night the cubs worked.on thier Promise and Law of the boomerang awards. This is a difficult night to put together as the cubs mostly sit through a whiteboard experience.

They talk about the terms 'My God', 'Promise' and 'Law'. This is more about there understanding of the terms and how thy relate back to the Cub Scout Promise and the Cub Scout Law.

There were a few games thrown in to break the excitement of the subject matters.

Cooking Night

This week our cubs got to cook on an open fire and help prepare some food for the night.

On the menu was Damper, Stew, Chicken and Corn soup plus milo. There was dessert but we ran out of time to put that together.

The first activity was making the chicken and corn soup. With the help of Vanessa the cubs learnt how this simple Chinese soup is mase, and that egg in it gives that stringy look. They weren't sure on it but they lapped it up when served.

Next the cubs cut up celery to add to the stew. This was more about learning to cut up vegetables and then add to the pot. While this was happening our Gold Boomerang cubs were preparing to cook a meal on the cooking fire.

Stage 3 was making Damper and cooking it as a twist on the cooking fire. As well they wrapped potatoes in foil and threw into fire.

As you woukd expect this stage took ages, and some cubs had trouble dealing with the smoke and getting over the fear of cooking on a fire. In the end no one got burnt - not even our regular injury prone Scout ;0).

Most completed the damper to the level it be eaten before our night ran out. The Golds did a great job on there efforts and all got that section signed off. I am told we have a special parade at the start next week for 4 cubs.

Thanks to my wife for the help this week. It is her night to help and I can't thank her enough.

Thanks to to Rikki, Steve and those that assisted in setting up on the night at 5pm.

Until next week.

Boomerang Age Brackets

One of the key things in Boomerang Awards is it is based on age. The brackets are:

BRONZE: 7.5 to 9
SILVER: 9 to 10
GOLD: 10 to 11
GREY WOLF: completion of GOLD level, but can work towards it while working on GOLD.

Their is a little room to start these no more than 6 months before the age bracket, but they will not get awarded the bafge until they turn the age bracket. Their is a lot in the boomerang work and to ensure enough time to complete Grey Wolf is why we allow the early start point. However, they must have completed the previous boomerang level first.

Also, if they do not complete all 10 sections by birthday, they will not acheive the badge. Again, if they are close to completing, say one or two weeks, we will allow it, but if they come two months later than they lose that badge and must start next one.

The GREY WOLF award can be worn on their shirt in Scouts, until they earn the Pioneering Badge.
