Fire, Fire

No not really, we were visited this week by the Cedar Creek Rural Fire Service. The cubs were given a presentation on bushfires and safety.

The videos were great and showed how rapidly a fire can catch on.

Each cub was presented with a bushfire safety pack and it included a couple of models.

The best bit was to come. At the end, each cub were given a chance to use the fire hose on the truck the fire fighters brought up. I was waiting for the smaller cubs to be lifted.off the ground, but the fire fighters were holding tight.

Now if it wasn't wet enough already with the rain on Tuesday, after 20+ cubs hosing the parade ground it was like January rain.

It was a great experience and one we will do again.

Thanks to Peter Davidson(aka Redback) for organising this on short notice. Our planned outing to Beenleigh fire station was put on hold.

Welcome aboard - week 2

This week we invested Elliott and Jasper into our section. These two boys are cousins and were planned to be invested last week, but Elliott was away.

To Elliott and Jasper we welcome you aboard the Beenleigh Cub Pack.

Well done to Dingo for doing the duty of investing the new members.

Another Bronze Boomerang

Last week I posted all the recipients who earned and were awarded their Boomerang Badges. I have inexpliciable left one off - Connor, our quiet achiever, who was awarded his Bronze Boomerang also on that night.

Bagheera has spent time in the sin bin for forgetting him off the list last week.

Grey Wolf Hike

Well done to Ashley R for completing a Grey Wolf Hike that saw her deliver pamphlets for our Car Boot Sale. Thanks to the cubs that went with her and to Rikki for prodding them along ;-)

Ashley is now only one level 2 badge from earningnthe Grey Wolf, her game resource was great and she also reived her 3rd level 2 on Tuesday.

Science night

Well what a terrific night the cubs had this week. Thanks to Rama, we held a science night , where the cubs got to make an electeic magnet with a screw, wires and battery. The cubs were able to demonstrate it working by picking up washers.

The second experiment was to build a potato clock. This invovles using 2 potatos as the batteries, that are lined with wires to a digital clock. The idea is to shiw hiw a chemical reaction between zinc nails and the acids contained in the potatos can generate electricity.

They all worked after some adjustment.

Well done Rama this was a great night.

Boomerang Awards

Well done to the following cubs who have acheived their boomerang awards this week.

Brayden - Bronze
Harrison D - Bronze
Harrison S - Silver
Alexandra - Silver
Danielle - Gold

Well done everyone. The silvers are now a step closer to getting to Cuboree in 2012.

Welcome aboard

This week we invested two new members into our section, Jasmine and Alex H. Both are vwry excited to be part of our pack and we know they will be great additions to our great bunch of cubs.

From all the leaders welcome aboard our happy family.

Promise and Law night

Last night the cubs worked.on thier Promise and Law of the boomerang awards. This is a difficult night to put together as the cubs mostly sit through a whiteboard experience.

They talk about the terms 'My God', 'Promise' and 'Law'. This is more about there understanding of the terms and how thy relate back to the Cub Scout Promise and the Cub Scout Law.

There were a few games thrown in to break the excitement of the subject matters.

Cuboree Fundraising Update

Ppease be aware that the 2 Cuboree fundraising BBQs scheduked for Aug 11 and 18 are no longer on due to location being unavailable.

Never fear though the rest of it is still moving forward. Last night there was a pesentation about the Maverick night and we had the pinewood derby cars on display.

Get involved, spread the word as the more outside patronagw that attends  the faster we get your cubs to Cuboree.

Pirates in the Park

The Logan River Parklands in Beenleigh was invaded by a motley bunch of pirates, Captain Bagheera, his 7 crew and 1 cabin boy, last Saturday afternoon.

Apparently after sailing up the Logan River their ship, SS Shark Bait, was sunk by a band of bushwackers. Captain Bagheera and his crew were caught napping, or maybe partying a little too hard the night before - ' Yo Ho Ho drink up me hearties'

Fortunately the Captain and his crew were able to get ashore and hide the treasure  aboard the SS Shark Bait, prior to it sinking.

Like all good pirates, if there are any, they used the set back as a  chance to recruit new pirates that had wandered into the park. Well it was more like acquire their assistance. ;0)

But before any new pirate can be part of the crew they have to go through a series of tests to prove their worthiness.

Test 1: raid the catering tent for fod and drink. Some did well while others chickened out! Maybe they didn't have the stomach for what cook had prepared.

Test 2: chance to test your skill at raiding and pillaging from your own crew. Pirates were grouped togther and had to raid other pirate teams treasure to see who could steal the most. This is a favourite pirate game.

Test 3: a game of tug of war, always a good test to try.who is good for the crows nest  or helping pull a captured ship in when hooked at close range. This got ugly when the Captain and his crew were beaten. There were some unlucky candidates that went for a wee swim. ;0)

Test 4: was to navigate a course with compasses. Once the course completed a further riddle was presented to send them out to locate the captain's treasure. See he had forgotten where he had hid it, and the riddle was hard to solve. Each new recruit got to share in the booty.

Final Test: untying ropes. Here the pirates grab a rope end and then have to work together to untangle the web of knotted ropes.

When all was the new crew kindly borrowed a passing ships ride and last seen heading out to Moreton Bay.

It was a fun afternoon and the cubs learnt a lot and had a great adventure.

Cuboree Fundraising

Our Cub pack is in serious need of your assistance to help raise moneys to be able to send 23 of our Cubs to Cuboree in Rockhampton 2012. We have come up with ideas for fundraising and need your support and help to implement these ideas to ensure that no cubs miss out on the fabulous experience of Cuboree due to financial difficulties.

Starting from immediately we are asking all Cubs to take a small change bag and ask people to donate their small change ie. 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c pieces. This will be an ongoing mission and once Cubs have collected coins they can deposit them with the leaders. We will be keeping a tally of change collected and there will be a prize for most change collected.

Other events planned for 2011 for fundraising are:

11th August BBQ at Office Works – Loganholme
18th August BBQ at Office Works – Loganholme
3rd September Car boot Sale and Car Wash to be held at the Beenleigh Den
17th September Themed Movie Marathon Night at the den
24th September Casino Night
1st October Grandfinal Weekend and Bathurst at the Den
8th October Pine Wood Derby
15th October Ladies Night at the Den
29th October Halloween Disco
12th November Market Day at Beenleigh Markets
3rd December Warehouse Shopping Tours
4th December Car Rally

As you can see it will be a very busy couple of months and we need all hands on deck. If you are able to assist with obtaining donations for prizes at Den nights, washing cars for the Car wash or any other items including general organising, it would be really appreciated. We would truly love to raise sufficient funds so no parent would need to pay for their child to attend Cuboree.

Pack Council

Wow what a great Pacm Council we had last night. I have to admit I was going to.try something a little different, and it worked a charm. The Sixers and Seconds that attended were just so full of ideas that our whiteboard was overflowing with ideas.

In the end our Ekka night, Father's day night and games to kick start the evenings, for the next 11 weeks have come out of these great cubs.

Thanks to those that attended last night you were all very inspiring and great to work with.
