Fairy Tale Camp - Karingal, Mt Cotton

The Beenleigh Cub Scouts went to Karingal Campsite for there annual Cub Camp this year. The theme was Fairy Tales. The challenge hre was to make it less Cinderella and more mixed.

The first activity was the Campfire, where stories were spun and the songs sung with gusto.

Morning came and the Cub Scouts were sent on a Hansel and Gretel Ramble to find all the trail signs left.  Here are photos of them finding the hindden messages and pointers.

At the end of the trail they found hte Gingerbread House - ok it was the obstacle course, which they had time to test themselves on. This object of the weekend was to try and get them working as a team, didn't always work but they are getting better at it and thinking of others first.

Morning tea brings a healthy smile :)

It was then time to get dressed into costume and get ready for our next activity. See the cool outfits that many got to wear. And yes the Gingerbread man did run as fast as he could!

Goldilocks, Jessie, Alice 1 & 2 and Little Red Riding Hood!

The Cub Scouts were put the challenge, there is a theory that if you build a house in atree of old log, and make it inviting, you can possibly get fairies/elves or orges to return tothe forrest and live in the houses designed.

The only criteria is to be creativity, make it appealing and you can only use natural items inthe constructions. Yes some may have bent the rules a little but the materials were not palstic.

The efforts look really great.

After the lunhc break, the Cub Scouts were given a chance to shot arrows and bows at a target. Some did well and got into the hoop.

Contruction was next, like the Three Little Pigs the cahllenge was to build a house of cards, this did beat most of them. then they had the chance to use pool noodle peices to construct a wall or house. In the end some merge the two items together.

So to ramp up the day, and with rain coming down, the Cinderella hockey was set up in the rotunda.
This was having 2 brooms and they had to sweep the 'puck' into the goals. I have never seen so many battles and long challenges. Normally this would be played with pool noodles, btu the sweep idea was different and novel.

As always we end a great camp with a traditional Camp Photo that will go on our Camp wall.

It was a really great camp and I know all those that attended had a great time.

Beenleigh Scouts Soil Spread Working Bee Cancelled - All done thanks to a parent and Bob Cat!

Firstly to all those that were coming to help with the soil spread on Sunday, thank you, thank you, thank you., That would have to be the biggest response ever to a call to arms for a working bee.

But thanks to the Whalen Family, who had a Bob Cat, on hand we no longer have to attend as it has been done for us. I can not thank Greg enough for taking time out of his day to attend to the ground for us. Huge thank you is still not enough.

For those that are disappointed that it is called off - yes I can hear you all sobbing and stamping your feet in frustration, we do need to organise a working bee in term 3 to get the fence repaired.

Thank you again to everyone who offered to bring Wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes and many extra hands. Enjoy your Sunday off.

What assistance can you offer?

Hi everyone,

Now that things are settling down and most of my hats I have been wearing are coming down to one,  it is now time for me to focus on Group matters. One of the core things that I would like to find out from everyone is what resources we have within our family pool. By this I am looking to put together a list of tradesmen and other services that families within the group can provide from time to time.

Now I am not asking to donate your time every time we need help, as there are times when we have to pay for fixes or repairs. I am seeking from everyone what professional type services they can provide to the group. I am very keen to tap into an electrician, builder, gardening services etc. For paid work I would prefer to offer work to those within the group first before seeking outside assistance.

In the next three years I have a group plan that will see some changes around the den, assuming we can get the grants for them or can fundraise to cover these costs. As is always the case when you are trying to find the right person, you don't even know they exist under your nose. This came up when discussing the proposed shed design with a Scout Family member.

Proposed changes in next twelve/eighteen months:
  • Make over of the Scout Cupboard (similar to the Cub cupboard)
  • Possible quote for a Kitchen makeover
  • Potential work in the shed for shelving and cupboards for lock away storage or patrol meeting room.
  • Grounds garden project
  • Seating around the Campfire area.
  • Lighting improvements around the den
This is just a few ideas that we need to resource and have guidance or professional assistance with.

If you are prepared to offer your services please let me know and I will add you to my contact list. I am also offering you a chance to advertise your business services too with a business card area for you all to tap into. A pin board will be set up for you to add your cards too in the next month.

I look forward to hearing back on what is available to us.

Seeking Joey Scouts

The Beenleigh Scout Group is seeking your assistance in helping to promote the Joey Scout section to your family, friends, co-workers and schools. Our Joey Scout section needs an increase in membership, as the majority will move up to Cub Scouts by December, leaving that section with only a couple of Joey Scouts. Nobody like to see sad Joey faces :).

This section is the little known section and it runs from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm on a Tuesday, provides a great introduction to Scouting for all children 6 -7.5 years of age. They get to have a heap of fun, do lots of activities, enjoy a sleepover or two at other dens, and the work they do can earn them the Joey Scout Promise badge.

If you can assist in helping promote we have flyers at the den we can provide to hand out at schools. I am also keen talk with various school leaders to see if we can promote in the newsletters they distribute.

We all know how great it is to be in Scouting so please spread the word and if you have people interested please have them contact me for more information.

Regards and yours in Scouting

Mum's Trivia night

The Cub Scouts treated Mum to a Trivia night on the Jungle Book and Scouting History last night.

We had 7 tables of very excited Cub Scouts and gracious Mum's and Grandother's who were happy to be invited to a night about them.

Round 1 was on the Jungle Book and as always there are always debates and discussions on the answers. In the middle of this round an activity was thrown in that was very interactive.

Everyone was invited outside to be apart of the action song 'Singing in the Rain'. Now what Mum and grandmothers didn't know was that the Cub Scouts had practiced this the week before and there was plenty of excitement this week as they got to see parents doing this funny song.

The song basically sings the chorus aof 'Sinnging in the Rain' and then gets to a point where we stop it and do some actions. Actions are Thumbs Up, elbows in, knees bent, knees together, toes in, butts outs, head up, mouth open and finally tongues out. We then sing a gobbled up sound word  - roochacha twice. The idea is to repeat and each time you add an extra bit and repeat the chorus. Nothing looks funnier than all the Mums and grandmothers getting to put it all together. It was a fun acivity.

We continue on with the Trivia and complete Round 1 and total up that round. From here we go into round 2 but start by working out what should not be in a non personal first aid kit. Everyone gets the soap, suncream and antisceptic cream wrong and lose points. Bagheera is wicked! :) People did put Bagheera to task on them but all these items can be harmful to people. Now reality says we should have suncream on hand at all times pand Cubs/Leaders need to know who can and can't wear it.

Round 2 is on Scoutong History with questions around when Scouting started, who was BP (Lord Robert Baden-Powell and the founder of Scouting). The other half of this round was about the Beenleigh Group's history.

In the end we finish off with a 'Thread the Rope' game which sees everyone trying to thread rope through their clothing and out the other side. Some decided they wanted to hold everyone on the one piece of rope. With a tall and short next to each other it looked funny at the end.

Mum's and Grandmothers were then treated to coffee/tea and cake to end the night.

All had a great night and the high level noise ensured all attending were happy and excited Cub Scouts.

If you want a.laugh the 'Singing in the Rain' song was filmed.  Apologise for the bad singing but we all can't be Michael Bubble! :-)

Back to basics

Last night the Cub Scouts held a Back To Basics night where the idea was to have anight with no lights and do activities from the past.

Game one was to do a torch hunt for corks in the grounds of the den.

Then the Cub Scouts worked on blackboards and chalk, having to draw Australian animals and reef knots. Talk about the skill of drawings and the enthusiasm on taking up the challenge. Certainly was a different concept for them. The Cub Scouts were told of why we use Chalk and slate back in the days.

Finally they worked on their skits for Region Camp and theu are lookong polished.

Well done to Elliott for his appointment to Second and earning his Leadership badge.

Also congrats to Ben S for earning his Gold Boomerang and Ryker for Pets Level 1.
